Millarville Grade Configuration
At the Foothills School Division Board meeting, held on November 13 2019, it was decided that Millarville Community School will remain a Kindergarten to Grade 8 grade configuration.
The history behind this resolution dates back to May 2018 when the Board of Trustees received a request from the Millarville Community School Parent Council asking that the Board of Trustees consider a change in grade configuration at Millarville Community School from a Kindergarten to Grade 8 (K to 8) configuration to a Kindergarten to Grade 9 (K to 9) configuration. This request resulted in a report being prepared by School Division administration on the possible implications of such a change. This report included Programming, Attendance, Capital, Transportation, and Staffing Implications. The Board of Trustees then passed a Notice of Motion on January 16, 2019 to change the grade configuration at Millarville Community School from K to 8 to K to 9 and a consultation process was concurrently planned and implemented:
Families in all area schools were also invited to participate in public consultation opportunities on:
- September 10, 2019 (6:30pm - 8:00pm) - Millarville Community School
- September 24, 2019 (6:30pm - 8:00pm) - Oilfields High School
- September 14, 2019 to October 15, 2019 – Online Submissions
After reviewing the online feedback and a report generated by School Division administration, the Board of Trustees voted on November 13, 2019 to defeat a motion to reconfigure Millarville Community School from a K to 8 to a K to 9 grade configuration. This decision was made after reflective and careful consideration to the information received both at the in person and online consultations. The Board was appreciative of the additional feedback given in addition to the configuration being debated and felt that this information should be discussed further and perhaps considered by the Board at a later date in time.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your engagement. We appreciate the voice of our school communities during these consultative processes.
Chair, Foothills School Division Board of Trustees
